Term 4 Week 5
It certainly has been a challenging start to the week after the weekend’s storm activity. We would like to thank everyone for their understanding in relation to the school closures at the beginning of the week. We recognise that this may have caused challenges for your family and children, and we have appreciated your patience and support over this time. Our thoughts are with those families that were heavily impacted and those still without power.
We would like to especially thank our exceptional Grounds person Neil, who went above and beyond to prune and remove debris throughout the school and local area to make things safe for our community over the weekend and this week. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated staff member working with us at Eden Hills Primary. Thank you!
As we rapidly approach the end of the school year, staff are busily preparing a number of end-of-year activities including Graduation, our concert at the Capri Theatre and class-based learning opportunities. It is always a busy but rewarding period where we get to reflect upon the year gone by and celebrate our students’ achievements. We are currently on target to enter 2023 with the highest single Reception intake on record and as a result we will be running a 10-class model next year.

World Teachers’ Day
On Wednesday 2 November we had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank all our amazing teachers for the important work they do within our classrooms and school community. The SSOs put on a lovely morning tea and together we showed our appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and the incredible work they provide to our students.

Japanese Cultural Day
Minasan Konnichiwa!
On November 2, Eden Hills Primary School celebrated Japanese Cultural Day. Room 3 did an amazing job of commencing the day by hosting a whole school assembly in which they sang atama kata (heads and shoulders) in Japanese. Next we delivered a speech with Kazuyo, our Japanese teaching assistant, in both Japanese and English to formally announce the day.
The classes then travelled off and participated in a range of interesting Japanese cultural activities – uchiwa (Japanese fan) making, sumo wrestler craft and game, anime watching and Japanese relays. At the end of a fun-packed activity schedule, our school canteen provided us with a delicious sushi lunch.
After lunch, Noriko Tadano– a very talented Adelaide based artist – performed a show for the whole school. Noriko thoroughly entertained us with her awe-inspiring shamisen (traditional Japanese three stringed instrument) playing, beautiful singing and taiko drumming. Her show was very interactive, one lucky student had a mini shamisen tutorial on stage and by the end of her performance, Noriko had everyone up singing and dancing.
Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for supporting Japanese Cultural Day! We were delighted to see the Eden Hills Primary School students and staff immersed in the Japanese culture and happily getting into the spirit of the day!

Remembrance Day
Today (11/11/22) was Remembrance Day and I really enjoyed it even though it was a day of sadness. I learnt about how Remembrance Day used to be called Armistice Day. I also loved the number of special guests who came to our classrooms. Then I had to say a speech which I was nervous for but it went really well. I also got to shake Lieutenant Finlay’s hand which was awesome. All out it was an awesome day.

On the 11th of the 11th of 2022 Remembrance Day began. l got to learn a lot more about Remembrance Day and why it happened and how it had a name change and even though every year we talked about it in class we learnt more deeply about it this year. When we had family and loved ones into the classroom it was just amazing because we all had a fun time. When Lieutenant Finlay came, each class was buzzing with questions. I think that the morning of Remembrance Day went amazingly well because everyone got to do activities about the day, got to have loved ones over if they could and at the assembly everyone was well behaved, respectful and quiet.

Today was Remembrance Day, we met a medical army officer by the name of Lieutenant Finlay Lamond. I felt really good about today because I learnt a lot about Remembrance Day and we had a lot of visitors from people’s families and their special people. Overall, I really enjoyed today and I hope Lieutenant Finlay comes back to our school again.

Public Education Forum
This term, the South Australian Government is hosting a state-wide conversation about the purpose of public education, starting with students. They want to hear their ideas about what makes the biggest difference to learning and for them to imagine the possible. Many education systems around the world are learning how powerful it is to partner with students and use their valuable expertise to influence the future of learning.
Two students, Felix and Pippa, represented EHPS and worked with representatives from other schools to discuss topics such as student wellbeing, student agency, the curriculum, and preparing for life after school. All the feedback collected from the forums will be shared with school principals in 2023 to create a statement about what public education stands for and how the government measures how we are going.
Pippa and I were invited to go to a student forum so people in the future could learn better from what kids nowadays have said. We both had a voice in what would happen by completing surveys and we saw data on how people think they fit in to their school. We also saw and analysed a chart of data about student wellbeing. I really enjoyed it because I learnt how kids my age feels about their learning and I hope it continues.
Felix
Felix and I were invited to attend the first student forum in South Australia, it took place on Tuesday, the 8-11-22. It was very exciting! We were even interviewed on camera! They asked us some questions, one of them being ‘what are three words to describe today?’ My answer was: new, exciting and collaborative.
The most exciting thing about this forum is that students like me have a say in the future of education in our state.

Beach Volleyball
On Friday 4 November, 13 students from year 5/6 travelled down to Glenelg Beach to compete at the Beach Volleyball Carnival. All students from Eden Hills competed with pride and showcased excellent teamwork skills throughout their games.
A special congratulations to the following students who won their Grand final defeating their opposition in the dying seconds of the match: Aleks, Henri, Lucas, Oliver, Isaac & Leon.
Well done to all students who competed and thank you to all parents who came to support, coach and umpire on the day.

Commissioner’s Digital Challenge
In term 3, students from rooms 7 - 10 participated in the Commissioner's Digital Challenge for 2023. Students had to design a toy/gadget that would be suitable for a child moving to Mars. Students voted on their favourite designs to send away to the challenge judges.
Maya’s (room 7) 'robot dog' design has been selected as one of the top-rated designs to be part of the state-wide Space to Dream travelling exhibition. Maya’s hand drawn design will be enlarged, printed and mounted in 2D to be displayed alongside other top-rated designs.
Congratulations Maya!
Well done to Maya and all students who participated.
Language Awards
Congratulations to Jessica and Eliana who have been chosen as language
award recipients this year. Their achievements will be formally acknowledged at the 2022 School of Languages Celebration of Achievement.

Resource Centre News
Summer Reading
After last year’s successful trial, we have now embedded our Summer Reading program with Rec-Year 5 students able to borrow books from the Resource Centre for the summer holidays.
Why read during the summer holidays?
The research shows that children who don’t read much over the long summer holidays can lose gains they've made in their reading levels and fluency over the year. This is true for all children, but especially for children who are struggling readers. Children who keep reading over the summer holidays can avoid the 'summer slide' and may even make reading gains for the start of the next school year.
To encourage your child to read over the long summer break, take the pressure off and keep it fun. Make summer reading about reading for pleasure. Let your child choose what they read with the focus on relaxation and enjoyment. ‘Easy’ reading is OK - getting into the reading habit and enjoying what they're reading is important.
Timeline:
Week 7
- last week for normal borrowing
Week 8
- all books and readers due back by Monday 5 Dec
- all Rec-Year 5 students given a Summer Reading Contract (participation optional) to be signed by them & an adult at home and returned to school as soon as possible
Week 9
- Monday 12 Dec is the last day for returning contracts
- students borrow books for the holidays
Propagation Shed
It’s time to get potting! After a very long period of what has felt like an extended winter, we are finally starting to get some sunny days and it is time to get more seeds and seedlings planted. The vines growing over the propagation shed are providing increased shade cover which will be welcomed by students and the worms in the little worm farm, as the temperatures rise. The worm farm is producing some ‘lovely’ worm tea and this is being diluted and used to water the raised veggie gardens in the Nature Play space. Any donations of seeds or seedlings would be most welcome!
Thank you.

Nature Play
Every day is a ‘Nature Play Day’ here at Eden Hills Primary School. We are so fortunate to share such a beautiful setting with the local plants and wildlife. In particular, the birds have been very active over the last few months. Large numbers of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Crimson Rosellas, Red Wattle birds, New Holland Honeyeaters, Rainbow Lorikeets, Galahs, Magpies and even Boobook owls (to name a few) have been spotted on our school grounds. Koalas are also regular visitors, sleeping in the Grey Box trees, much to the delight of our students and staff.
Materials & Services Poll
Governing Council is seeking your support for our school’s 2023 materials and services charge of $375 to be compulsory, and therefore recoverable. This means if the charge is not paid, we can legally recover the debt from families.
We will be conducting on-line polling for the Materials and Services Charge for 2023. Each family is entitled to one vote per student per poll. The poll opens on Wednesday 9 November 2022 and closes on Wednesday 23 November 2022.
Our school has determined that a materials and services charges of $375 will allow us to offer the resources, technology and programs that we would like for our students to complete their curriculum.
The State Government has made a commitment to provide a $100 rebate so the amount will work out to $275 per student. As in previous years, the Governing Council strongly encourage you to support the poll by voting yes to making the Materials and Services fee for 2023 fully legally recoverable. Thank you for your support.
Due to a system error, Reception children starting in 2023 are showing as year 1. This will not affect the poll.
End of year Concert
Our annual End of Year Concert will be held on Thursday 8 December at 7:00pm at the Capri Theatre Goodwood. Tickets will go on sale next week and further information will be provided.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is on Wednesday mornings between 8:30 and 8:50am and continues to be very popular, with many of our students coming in for toast, fruit and Milo.
Breakfast Club at Eden Hills would not be possible without the support of Kickstart for Kids. This organisation donates all of the bread, milk and margarine that we use, as well as a friendly volunteer helper every week. Thankyou Kickstart for Kids!
We still rely on donations of jam, vegemite, honey and Milo from the school community, and any of these items would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks.
The Christmas Giving Tree
Eden Hills Primary School will again be assisting the local Lions Club in supporting families in need in our local community.
We ask that next time you go shopping, you purchase a non-perishable item of food and/or a toy to place under the Giving Tree in the Office.
The Lions Club will collect the items from school on Friday 2 December.
We thank you for your assistance in helping us help those in need in our local community.
